A reminder: this week the eel season has started in Sweden. And that is something to put into the spotlight. But what is so special about this species? Managing director of the fish auctions in Stockholm and Smögen, Henrik Johansson, explains.
“Eel grows slowly. When they’re ready for sale the fish is at least eight years old. The oldest one we’ve ever known was 155 and died in 2014, after living his whole life swimming in a Swedish water well to keep the water clean.”
And the size?
“The average length is 40-60 cm and the weight is 500 kilograms. Our biggest eel at the fish auction ever was 2,9 kilos. Not really a small one!”
What is the expected supply this year?
30 to 40 tons. Just like last year. Then he laughs: “We are hoping for a lot of buyers outside of Sweden, so Pefa buyers you are all invited!”
Deal, everybody will buy eel in Stockholm and Smögen. But what is so special about the species?
“A lot of people don’t count eel to the fish species. That’s because it looks like a snake and the fact that it can live outside the water for a whole day. Where they pair is still undiscovered. Probably somewhere in the Sargasso Sea.”
The catch period is divergent as well, right?
That is correct. According to the regulations fishermen can make in the 120 days catch season just one catch trip. So that’s really challenging.”
Last but not least: what is the best way to prepare the eel?
Henrik thinks: “After catching it should go directly into the freezer. And just before consumption it should be boiled or cooked. Delicious!”

The Dutch fisheries and maritime fair is based around investing and innovating in technology and knowledge. The Holland Fisheries Event is aimed at a professional audience in the fishing and maritime industry, and has an international character. And this year we participate.
Pefa launched at the beginning of 2018 the smart Pefa eLog which we will expose at the HFE. This online service ensures a smooth catch registration for suppliers to the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority. Whether that happens at sea on a smartphone or ashore using a laptop.
We can smell summer, but we are already in the mood for October and the Holland Fisheries Event!

Good news. Now there is a smart way to buy fish online: Pefa Auction Clock. Buyer Collin van der Deijl (Zwanvis, IJmuiden) explains why he is so excited about the application.
What is the best feature of Pefa Auction Clock?
Collin: “I have been using the old Pefa online auction clock for about 8 years, and the previous owner of Zwanvis used it too. Pefa Auction Clock, which we have been using for about 2 months now, is much better and more extensive than the previous version. At days with lots of supply at different auctions we follow 6 concurrent Clocks and use just 2 screens. Nice system!”

“Being able to see at a glance what, where and from which boat was bought is very usable, just like the live tracking of the supply per fish species. The so-called pretake is handy too: we often use this for small bargains that are not that important. In addition, you can check your bank guarantee, mark favorite lots and stop the clock in many ways. I like printing of the exact amount as well; you can click on the desired amount in the clock and print this. And finally: it’s so easy to buy at different auctions in the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden at the same time!” explains Van der Deijl.
In addition to the Windows application of Pefa Auction Clock, the app for IOS and Android now has been launched.
“I had to test the software before it was released, so I know the quality. I like the uniform appearance: these apps are by look the same as Pefa Auction Clock on your pc. It makes it easy to switch or buy at different devices at the same time. Important: if you follow the auctions you prefer not to be called, so make sure the settings on your smartphone are correct. I ‘m glad it’s released, I will download it from the App Store soon.”

The opening hours are somewhat different these days. There is no auction on Holy Thursday and Good Friday in Denmark. Sweden is closed on Good Friday. And all auctions are closed on Easter Monday.
From Tuesday there will a lot of fish to buy at the Pefa Auctions.
